The human need for the Garments of Salvation
SCRIPTURE READING: Genesis3
The Coats of Skins for Adam and Eve
Text: Genesis 3:21
In the events that just precede our text verse, we have the Fall of Man, and the Revelation of the Curses that Sin brought upon this world. Sin has done great damage. The relationship with God is ruined; the earth has been cursed; man has been damned; physical death has begun; and spiritual death has entered humanity. Now, when things appear most desperate for men, the Lord God appears on the scene, and He gives Mankind Hope. In reality, it is hope for the future of mankind – and men and women individually; but for Adam and Eve it is salvation. These Coats of Skins are representative of the Love and Grace of God – which, when directed at any man or woman, must inevitably accomplish salvation!
Man’s Unworthiness and God’s Grace
Isn’t it amazing, how that whenever the Grace of God is shown, it is shown best against the backdrop of man’s Sinfulness and Wickedness? I suppose this must be true, since Grace only appears when there is no merit or worth. In this Third Chapter of Genesis, we have the record of a Man and a Woman, who were created Innocent and Pure, who fell from that First Estate, and Sinned against their Creator. And yet, despite their Sinfulness, we see that God has still yet made provision for them to be Redeemed from the Guilt of their sins, and to be Accepted in His Holy Sight! This is how Amazing His Grace is. We cannot even imagine it, until it is revealed unto us. Gen. 3:8; Heb. 2:6-10
The Animal Sacrifice
The coats of skins that were made, indicate that there must have been some animal or animals that died so that these coats of skins could be made. This means that there must have been some Animal or Animals that were Sacrificed here in our text verse. Did you ever consider that there were consequences that even the Creation itself must endure because of the sin of Adam and the Fall of Man? The death of these animals, so that Clothes could be Made for Adam and Eve, pictures the Death of the Lord Jesus Christ so that we could be Clothed in the Sight of God. The Bible makes it clear to us that where there is sin, there must of necessity be the death of the sinner. God sent His Son to Die for the sins of Adam and Eve, and indeed for the sins of all of the Elect of God. What the Son did, is to lay down His Life for a Sacrifice so that the Children that God had given to Him might have live. You see, death is the result of sin – so someone must die. Clothing Made by God
Adam and Eve could never, even if they had lived forever, have made for themselves clothing that would make them presentable in the Sight of God. Despite all of their best efforts, they would have forever been Naked and Unrighteous before God – their sins could not be covered over. The Clothes of the Animals in our text verse, illustrate the Fullness and the Completeness of the Salvation that God has delivered, and made effective, to all of the Elect of God. You see, He cleanses us from our sins – but that’s not all. He doesn’t then leave us there in that sinless condition to fend for ourselves, or to present ourselves before the Thrice Holy God of Justice. No, He cleanses us from our sins, but then He imputes unto us the Righteousness of Jesus Christ. It is the Righteousness of Jesus Christ that is pictured in the coats of skins. It is the Righteousness of Jesus Christ that allows us into the Presence of God Almighty. Gen. 3:7-10; Isa. 64:6; 61:10; Ps. 85:2; Rom. 4:6-82Cor. 5:21
